FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LANSING TOWNSHIP, MI (May 22, 2024) – Lansing Township Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of Firefighter/Paramedic Johnathan Allen Esch on Saturday, May 18, 2024. On May 18, 2024, John along with an additional family member were tragically killed, and other members of his family injured, including Erika, his wife of 6 months.

Lansing Township Fire Department would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our neighboring fire departments for providing unwavering support during this very difficult time. These departments have provided staffing coverage to our personnel who responded to the scene and those that regularly worked with John while they grieve. Further, we are comforted and grateful for the care and support from the fire service and the surrounding community for John and his family.

John was known as an extremely compassionate and knowledgeable paramedic and highly respected firefighter. John joined the Department in July of 2020 and has served the community and the EMS and fire service with pride throughout his career.

Memorial contributions and sentiments of grief can be sent to the below information until such time that a fund can be established.

Free Blood Pressure Checks: The Fire Department is still offering free blood pressure checks. Stop by either station for a quick check.

Outdoor Barrel Burning:  Township Ordinance 25.5 prohibits outdoor barrel burning, ground burning, and the use of incinerators. Violation of this ordinance is a misdemeanor. Please help your Fire Department by complying with this ordinance and make LansingTownship a better place to live and breathe.

Part-time Firefighters Wanted: If you would like to serve your community, why not consider being a part-time firefighter? If you are 18 years of age, in good physical condition and have a valid Michigan driver's license with a good driver's record, contact Chief Hendy at 485-5443.

Ambulance Service Update: On September 30, 2003, we became an Advanced Life Support Service. This means that we will always have a paramedic on each ambulance whenever we respond to a call. We now have ten (10) state licensed full time firefighter/paramedics on staff. We have also added a third ambulance to our fleet. This allows us to still serve both sides of the township when we take an ambulance out of service for scheduled maintenance.

If you have any comments or questions about your ambulance service please contact Chief Todd Hendy, or EMS Director Captain Gary Spalding at 517-485-5443.
